Using Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver MX is the web design suite from Macromedia. It is one of the more popular programs used by anyone from beginners to web professionals. Here you will find instructions on how to upload your site using Dreamweaver MX.

Setting up a Site

The first step and probably the most time consuming part is to set up a site in Dreamweaver. If you have done this already, and your FTP settings are correct, then proceed to the next section, otherwise, continue reading on.

  1. In the Dreamweaver main (design) screen, press F8 and you will see in the right-hand pane, the Files section will open up.
  2. In the Files section, you will see a set of menus, click on the "Site" menu. In there you need to click "New Site...".
  3. A wizard will appear on the screen. Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the screen.
  4. On the next screen, Enter in a name for your site. Make it something meaningful so you can easily identify it from other sites you may be working on.
  5. Next you need to find your site's root folder. To do this click on the folder icon and browse to where it is located on your computer.
  6. Now you need to type in the full URL of your website in the HTTP Address box. This is so Dreamweaver can check your links.
  7. Once you have done that, click on "Remote Info". This can be found in the list on the left.
  8. This is where you set up your FTP settings. At the moment you will see a single menu, click it, and choose "FTP". A few new boxes will appear.
  9. In the FTP host box, type your domain name.
  10. In the Host Directory box, type /public_html/.
  11. In the Login and Password boxes, enter your FTP username and password.
  12. When you are sure all the settings are correct, check the "Save" box and click "Test".
  13. You should get a note saying Dreamweaver connected successfully, if not, go back and check your settings and try again.
  14. Click "Ok" and then click "Done". You are now ready to upload your site.
Uploading your site

Now that you have set Dreamweaver up correctly, you can finally start uploading your site to the web.

  1. From the design screen, look on the right pane under the Files heading and click on the icon on the far-right of the toolbar. If you hold your mouse over this button, it will say "Expand/Collapse".
  2. You will now be presented with a screen with two panes. The left pane lists all the files that are uploaded to your website, the right pane lists the files that are on your computer.
  3. First you need to connect to the server. Do this by clicking the connect icon on the toolbar. It is the first button from the left.
  4. Once connected, the left pane will refresh and you will be able to see the files that are currently located on the server.
  5. If you want to upload your site to a directory, you have to create it first. Simply right-click in the left pane, click "New Folder" and type in the name you want (ensure this is in lowercase) and press Enter. Double-click the new folder, this is now where all your files will be uploaded.
  6. Now you need to select the files and folders you want to upload. To do this, click the first file or folder in the right pane. Next, hold down the Shift key and click on the last file. All your files will now be selected.
  7. To start uploading your files, right-click the selected files and click "Put".
  8. Once uploading is complete, close that whole window down and you will be returned to the design screen.
